Optus hunts for new CIO
update After nearly three years at the helm of Optus's technology operations, chief information officer Soo Kee Ng has decided to call it a day.
Singapore Telecommunications-owned Optus is in the midst of finalising a replacement, sources close to the company told ZDNet Australia.
Late this evening, an Optus spokesperson confirmed that Ng will stay within the SingTel Group but assume a senior position in Singapore. "He will be the CIO there," she said.
"An internal and external search has been conducted ... we'll have a replacement within the month," she added.
A SingTel spokesperson said as CIO, Ng will support the Singapore operations headed by Allen Lew.
According to Optus, Ng (pic) was appointed to the CIO role in May 2004.
He has been with the SingTel Group for over 30 years, and has had CIO stints with Belgium's Belgacom and Globe Telecom in the Philippines.
Prior to his Optus appointment, Ng was a director of Information Systems for SingTel, based in Singapore. In this role he was responsible for the implementation and transformation of SingTel's billing systems, according to Optus.
Yoke Weng Ng remains Group CIO, with overall responsibility for the planning, development and operations of the IT infrastructure at SingTel.
Optus is part of a group of nine telcos -- dubbed the G9 -- hoping to build their own nationwide fibre broadband network.
Last Friday, the group, which includes AAPT, iiNet, Internode, Macquarie Telecom, PowerTel, Primus, Soul and TransACT, formally lodged their draft proposal for the broadband network with the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission).
