This week we look at how the National Broadband Network (NBN) connection in your home will work — and look at the impact the Labor leadership challenge could have on plans for the new network.

If Kevin Rudd does win the Labor leadership challenge on Monday it's bad news for Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, who has been speaking out openly against the deposed Prime Minister. If KRudd wins, can the communications minister really expect to hold on to his job? If the independents don't like the outcome, can Labor really expect to hold on to government? Next week could be a bad week for the NBN.

Also this week, Twisted Wire looks at how your home is going to connect to the new fibre network. Tom Sykes, manager of solution architects at NBN Co, explains how they will wire up your network termination device wherever you want it in the home. That makes it easy to plug in your Wi-Fi modem/router and you're all set up.

The risk is that our collective big fat pipes into the home chew up all available Wi-Fi capacity and we find we need more hard-wiring in our homes. As Internode founder Simon Hackett suggests, the obvious time to have that wiring done is when the NBN Co contractor is bringing the fibre into your home.

Talkback

If you check again, Senator Conroy simply said he will always work with the Prime Minister. He didn't bag KR or praise JG particularly. He also specifically said if there is a new PM on Monday, he would be delighted to be re-appointed as Communications Minister. He has proven himself effective at keeping the NBN going despite tremendous and sustained attacks. His job is safer than most.

OK, I checked again, and from the ABC AM interview, where I took the extract on the podcast, thisis what I found:

"...Kevin Rudd was putting the nation's interests, working families' interests, all at stake just to demand the foreign minister's job. He undermined and leaked during the election campaign. "

"...Kevin Rudd talks about a wave of destabilisation and undermining of him - really he should just look in the mirror. "

"... now we're plain talking about why the Caucus overwhelmingly dumped him and why the Caucus overwhelmingly doesn't want him back."

Surely that's bagging KR?

I stand corrected, Phil. I had not heard those particular statements from Senator Conroy. My apologies for the error.

Because the choice of Communications Minister, whether by Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd or a shaggy dog, will be heavily based upon keeping the NBN moving, there is no question that Senator Conroy will be re-appointed.

Conroy won't be going anywhere because it will be the egotistical fruitcake that will be going to the backbench on Monday if those with the smarts are anything to go by.
This is just another example of "Conroy telling it like it is!"....keep it up Mr Conroy.
Roll on NBN...

I think Mr Conroy will be shifted from this portfolio. He is an ambitious politician and I suspect he is bored with his current and would be looking for something new.

Phil,

You underestimate "Little old ladies". By the time the NBN arrives are nubile young women now who have Facebook accounts now and understand all this stuff now.

Could you clarify what you mean in your post. I cannot figure out if you are being sexist or complaining about the length of time NBN is taking to come to your street.

DoubtDoubt February 25th, 2012

It's Phil who is being sexist by assuming little old ladies are still using rotary dials and little old men aren't. My second point is that to be little and old in 2020 means the person is 8 years younger than what ever an "old" person is. This typical object of Phil's often repeated concern about "little old ladies" is probably a Facebook power user now and will have no problem coping with phones with push buttons in 8 years time.

I hope the point is clear now.

i agree with you that Rudd is not only undermining Gillard but he is a WMD, weapon of mass labor destruction. Hell haf no fury like a Kevin scorned...

Lets see, even if rudd loses , he had already teamed up with wilkie , who as we saw from the last election - HAS A MEMORY LIKE AN ELEPHANT... he remembers his pain and if betrayed he will go down and take you with him... recall when he was with ASIO and what the libs did to him and what gillard done to him now with the pokies...

an election is immenent, but lets just say that Rudd would rather lose the battle and win the war, even if gillard maintains power she will

1- face an election as ministers walk from her govt
2- lose an election as this will oblierate any chance of her going up against abbot.

Well done rudd, ur an evil genius, Rudd should come back as opposition leader, and given he was a previous PM, hard done by by the people, he would surely give abbott a one term run, and by them the economy would have gone to dog do, and the sympathy vote will definitely give rudd another go.

as for NBN....TIMMMMMBBBBBBBBBEEEEEERRRRR

If you look at this NBNCo document ...

http://www.nbnco.com.au/assets/documents/preparing-for-the-nbn.pdf

You will find this description of a free NBN installation ...

"The standard, free-of-charge installation covers connection to the room that provides the most direct and shortest path to the cable on the street. If you want it elsewhere, your installer can give you a quote on the cost, and may need to book a date to come back later to complete the installation."

That is a very specific location. Unless your "little old lady" happens to have her 'clockwork' phone in that specific location then the second sentence kicks in. That looks a lot like she will have to pay.

This is inconsistent with what the NBNCo rep told us on your podcast, Phil. Perhaps you could follow up with him to get clarification.
