Energy commodity price volatility and production variability in the Province of Alberta can cause wide swings in provincial royalty revenue streams. A $5 barrel of oil equivalent variation in price equates to a royalty revenue fluctuation of US$695 million. The challenge was to forecast fluctuations in energy prices to prevent loss of revenue for the province.
