Publisher’s description

A tutorial for booting a fully functional operating system based on the Linux 2.4 kernel on a Xilinx University Program Virtex II-Pro based development board is presented. Furthermore, this paper describes a reconfigurable hardware accelerator that can be accessed directly by applications or via a character device driver. To exploit the potential of the XUP board with Linux it has incorporated a motion estimation hardware accelerator - used for fast encoding of digital movies - to demonstrate the potential of such a reconfigurable platform.
