When the United States of America ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788, Congress received the power "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries." Upon this legal foundation rest the rights of US companies to buy and sell software. What is generally known as "selling software" is really selling a limited license to use and copy the software. I apologize for this nationalistic point of view to my non-U.S. readers. Some software includes patented technology. However, most software has only copyright protection.
