It's the consumerisation of the enterprise; employees expect to use Facebook, Twitter and applications beyond the standard operating environment (SOE). How do you manage that securely?

Enterprises have lost control of the applications that their employees are using, says IBM engineering manager Dr Paul Ashley on Patch Monday this week.

Ashley's team at IBM's Gold Coast Security Development Laboratory is developing technology that can automatically identify applications and control their access by analysing their data traffic.

"I think the days of enterprises locking down their workstations completely and not allowing people to do anything on them, I really think those days are almost over," he said in an interview recorded at IBM's Pulse 2011 event in Melbourne last week.

We also hear from Neil Readshaw, cloud security lead architect with IBM Global Services. He says that over the last year or so, people started to understand the differences between public clouds, private clouds and hybrids, and what those differences can mean for security.

Patch Monday also includes my usual look at some of last week's news headlines.
