in brief Western Australia Police has inked a new contract with network hardware supplier Motorola that will see it more than double the size of its radio network and add mobile data capabilities.

The new system — worth more than $25 million in total — will cover close to 20,000 square kilometres, compared to the 9000 square kilometres of the existing network, and feature a higher level of encryption technology to keep police communications secure. It has been dubbed "PEDI".

In addition, the force will also extend its mobile data system that allows officers to execute database searches on people, vehicles and places of interest.

Previously, the mobile data system was vehicle-based and covered only the greater metropolitan Perth area, according to a statement issued by Motorola this morning. However, the new system will increase the mobile data coverage to the whole state and add an additional 350 in-vehicle computers and over 200 hand-held personal data devices.
