ZDNet.com.au was informed of the move via an industry source, whose information was confirmed by Unwired this morning.

Martin Mercer, CEO of vividwireless and former head of Consumer Marketing at Telstra, will take on the role, looking after the vividwireless, Unwired, UnwiredBusiness and ubowireless brands under newly named umbrella brand Wireless Broadband Australia.

Mercer was brought on last year as CEO of vividwireless, the division rolling out WiMax broadband in Perth next month. Recently, the group announced that the roll-out would extend to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra.

Unwired Group chairman Ryan Stokes, son of Seven's Kerry Stokes, said that the extension of vividwireless to other mainland capitals meant that it was "appropriate to consolidate the businesses under the vividwireless CEO".

"As we near the completion of our network in Perth and the launch of vividwireless we can move to a new operational and growth structure," he said in a statement.

Spence has been well known in the telecommunications industry from his days at OzEmail in the late 90's and his chairmanship of the Internet Industry Association.
