TransACT has signed a trial agreement to become a retail service provider (RSP) for the first release sites on the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The provider will now be able to service customers over the NBN as well as on its own network.

"TransACT has been delivering FTTP voice, video and ISP solutions since 2007 so we are well suited to being an RSP on the NBN," Ivan Slavich, TransACT chief executive officer, said in a statement. "As an RSP on the NBN, we will continue to deliver superior products and services to our customers, complementary to our existing networks in the ACT and regional Victoria."

There are already a number of internet service providers (ISPs) that have become RSPs for NBN's first release sites: Vodafone, Optus, Telstra, Internode, iiNet, iPrimus, Exetel, AAPT, AARNet, Comscentre, Nextgen Networks, Platform Networks and SkyMesh.

TransACT said that it is now completing the on-board testing process with NBN Co, which sees it conduct pre-certification, interoperability and operational accreditation tests for the products that it will offer.

The NBN is operational in Tasmanian towns such as Scottsdale, Midway Point and Smithton, and NBN Co has also begun connecting test customers on the mainland in Armidale, New South Wales and in Willunga, South Australia.

NBN Co hasn't said yet when it intends to move on the next wave of sites beyond the first five that it had flagged for the mainland, but Prime Minister Julia Gillard has told Casuarina residents in the Northern Territory that the network will soon be rolled out in their area due to the agreement reached between NBN Co and Telstra.

Casuarina was one of the 14 sites named in July 2010 by NBN Co as the next wave of sites to which the network would extend.
