TPG Telecom has announced plans to offer services on Telstra's fibre network in South Brisbane, first approaching customers who will be forced to migrate to the service over the next 18 months.

Telstra opted to replace the copper network connecting around 18,000 premises in South Brisbane, because that telephone exchange is set to close to make way for the construction of the new Queensland Children's Hospital. In June, the telco began connecting its customers to the new fibre, and had begun discussions with its wholesalers to move their customers over.

TPG announced that it had finalised plans for services on the fibre network on broadband enthusiast forum Whirlpool yesterday.

"We will be sending email invitations with an offer to migrate your service to the new fibre optic plans. We expect the first round of invitations to be sent in early October and the whole process to be completed within the next 18 months."

TPG joins rival telcos iiNet and Internode in offering plans on the fibre network. iiNet was a reluctant sign-up to the new network, complaining that Telstra was not offering similar services to its competitors on the fibre network that it offered on the copper network.

iiNet and Internode have asked the competition watchdog to step in and ensure that the new network is regulated to offer fair wholesale services and prices when the copper network is dismantled.
