Westpac has dumped PC Tools as the antivirus product to protect its customers, picking up one of BitDefender's products instead.
January 11th, 2012 in Security by Michael Lee Comment VoteDirect from the "OMG! I must have this" department comes new pictures of the Raspberry Pi — the $25 to $35 computer that comes armed with a 700MHz ARM11 processor, 128/256MB of RAM, HDMI, USB ports, an SD card slot, audio jack and optional 10/100 Ethernet. Intended to teach children programming, at that price point I expect to see the big kids putting it into all sorts of unintended places and making cool applications.
These are populated boards from our first run of beta devices.

Asus has only tinkered around the edges of its netbook design with the Eee PC X101H. It's a fairly priced model, but it's getting hard to get excited about netbook performance any more.

Businesses with very specific Windows 7 tablet needs may find some value in the Q550, but it's a very slow performer at a serious asking price that is otherwise easily passed over.

Mark Dean helped build the original IBM PC, which officially celebrates its 30th birthday today. Dean was part of the 12-person IBM engineering team that designed that first machine in 1981 and helped ignite the PC revolution that has reshaped industries and forever changed the way humans work.

Both IDC and Gartner have reported weak first quarter sales for the PC industry, and that's likely to translate into some profit headwinds for Microsoft in its fiscal third quarter.
April 15th, 2011 in Microsoft by Larry Dignan Comment VoteHow can I be the only one in the office who remembers Olivetti? I'm not sure what they've been doing since the Envision multimedia PC (actually, I don't really remember that either). In any case, it appears that the company is back with ... you guessed it, an Android tablet. We were thinking of buying one for the office, but perhaps we should wait. It won't be long before they'll be given away in cereal boxes.
Olivetti, once the maker of beautiful typewriters, has gotten into the tablet game. The inevitably named Olipad will be sold through TIM, the Italian telecom company, from today for €400 (US$561).

What is this HTPC people are talking about? It's pretty straightforward - it's a PC acting as a playback device for your home theatre, hence Home Theatre PC.
