More TV Now may mean less TV later

More TV Now may mean less TV later

We all love sticking it to the man, so it's little surprise that Optus' TV Now court victory was hailed as a win for the mobile-wielding little people. Yet, in the longer term, the decision will force Stephen Conroy into a tricky legal corner; the resolution of the issue could see mobile-broadcast rights sequestered, or see footy all but eliminated from free-to-air networks.

Libs' credibility spent on NBN pricing

Libs' credibility spent on NBN pricing

Sometimes, even the Liberal Party gets what it asks for — in this case, a guarantee that NBN pricing won't match Internode's dizzying heights. But when the party still manages to find a way to complain, it's hard not to wonder whether its anti-NBN financial arguments are so riddled with inconsistencies that they're no longer relevant to the world in which the rest of us live.

NBN Co deals foster wireless doublespeak

NBN Co deals foster wireless doublespeak

Optus' recently revealed agreement to talk nicely about the NBN for the next 15 years reinforces the lengths to which NBN Co will go to ensure its network is built in a protective, competition-free bubble. But as ever more-onerous market protections come to light, we have to ask: is NBN Co tilting the field too far in its own favour? And could its caution compromise carriers' return on their LTE investments?

Productivity claims alone don't justify NBN

Productivity claims alone don't justify NBN

One of the murkiest and most problematic areas of support for the NBN is the implicit assumption that better broadband access will boost our national productivity. This, in turn, invariably seems to spawn problematic attempts to quantify these improvements — and conflict over what are often optimistic assumptions piled upon others.

Sans costs, Turnbull's 'policy' is no policy

Sans costs, Turnbull's 'policy' is no policy

Malcolm Turnbull may not have been announcing Liberal Party policy last week, but he might as well have been. Yet while his statements featured fewer technical fantasies than previous attempts, his unabashed optimism about Telstra and refusal to substantiate his claims with fact prove that the Coalition still lacks the gravitas to formulate workable NBN alternatives.

2011: the year we cross the t's

If 2010 was the year of the battle for the NBN, 2012 will be the year in which the government's telecoms policy reviews drive the agenda. And 2011? With the NBN now in its put-up-or-shut-up phase, expect rapid action at NBN Co this year — and pressure on wireless providers and internet service providers to figure out exactly where they're headed.
