Useless

With the crap data plans that Telstra offer, not to mention the $250 per GB excess usage charges, what is the use of more speed? Just means your quota will be used up in half the time.

Who compares a plans value based on the excess usage charge? You'll find Telstra are actually not the most expensive anyway.

I get 9GB for my $119 a month, rarely do I use it all. My business thrives as a result, able to get broadband in pretty much any town in Australia, and on a lot of highways between them. Thats $119 well spent if you ask me.

People that whinge have clearly never used the service. You simply get what you pay for, and this is a premium network

Enjoy your dial up speeds on 3, Voda, Optus and Virgin.

Good to see the Telstra employees are online

It'll be a sad day when there isn't a comment from a Telstra employee present. Good on you for trying to keep your company going.

??

telstra's expensive, but they're the best service. I'm a long time non-fan of telstra, but after using all the other carriers and being forced back to telstra by my company's corporate plan, i'd rather pay more for nextG than the crappy performance of optus even if my job didn't pay my bill.

I hate to admit it but....

As much as I hate to admit it, being an employee (not telstra) that travels extensively and needing internet access, Telstra is the ONLY company within a country mile that can supply the service. I have a Vodafone plan as well as it is CHEAP, but the speeds from it are lousy and the reception drops off as soon as I walk out the front door. So yes Telstra is expensive, but you do seem to get what you pay for and I for one am glad they at least offer the speeds they do.

Speed is good but value for money is non-existant

Telstra has the knack of blurting about how great their theoretical maximum speeds are. Every time Sol opens his neck there is the yarn - Telstra has the world's fastest mobile broadband network.

Okay, but what about the speeds experienced in practice. Using ADSL, Cable and even Dialup as a guide, theoretical speeds have only ever been matched in practice by 3/4 of the rated speed. EG: ADSL2+ comes with a top speed of 24Mbit downstream but the max most can experience is 18 or maybe 19Mbit and that is someone living next door to the exchange.

Then comes the biggie - value for money. Speed should not be considered the only factor when planning prices for a product. There are a number of reasons for this. The maximum speed is governed by the server's upstream speed and the amount of congestion on the ISP's network just as much as it is governed by the quality of the customer's phone line and their distance from their exchange.

Then there is the data allocation. EG: Today I received in my GPO box a leaflet advertising Telstra, Optus Vodafone and Virgin broadband plans. I have Virgin so I'll compare that to NextG - Telstra is offering a USB key modem and 75 MB of downloads for $149.00. Virgin's modem is $179.00 but it comes with 1GB of downloads. There was no mention of what it costs to maintain any of the plans but I know that with Virgin I can top-up for $30 and that buys another 1GB of downloads. I bet London to a brick that Telstra's 1GB costs MUCH more.

I'd be quite surprised if I lost that bet.

Ah yes.

Telstra are accused of not doing anything for the consumer. But when they do, they get no credit at all. If this was Internode all the Whirlpool intelligentsia would be here crowing.

Plus, anyone who says anything nice about the situation or Telstra is just an employee? I guess that's a change from a few months back when they were fanboy shareholders.

This is a positive announcement and step in the right direction for us all and no amount of pointless discrediting from those who have vested interests elsewhere, can change that.

re Ah yes.

Hear, Hear. Good to hear some positive feedback but "hold the phone" as I am sure the Telstra bashers will soon be back on the case. They just need more time to get their adjectives, and objections in order.

It depends

If one has money to burn then of course the announcement will be attractive to them though don't forget, NextG suffers from the same issues that affect any wireless network - dropouts, latency, etc etc. NextG isn't immune from these things simply because of an artifically high price and a 'premium' tag from Telstra's marketing department.

Who gets the speed

What devices will work at this speed. When they changed from 3 to 7Mbit speed all they units had to be upgraded or replaced to work at the new speed. Is this the same

Out of the blue

ZDNet is an invaluable tool for the discerning reader. If intelligent sensible people use & read this forum (I consider myself one) and would only ever respond with a well considered and constructive answer, then the occasional fluffy outburst type person might go away. However when emotion is allowed to be relayed through such a medium then the darkness begins. Please, everyone ignore that which you might not agree with and if able turn it into something useful for us all, but NEVER EVER try and take a fish from the mouth of a shark.
