Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks have achieved a peak downlink speed of 100Mbps and upload speed of 31Mbps in mobile Long Term Evolution (LTE) trials over a distance of 75km.

The trial was conducted between Mount Hope and Mount Burrumboot in central Victoria. The two companies had collaborated on the tests to determine the impact that distance would impose on data speeds if an LTE roll-out were to take place.

Telstra chief operations officer, Michael Rocca, said that distance testing was crucial when implementing Australian networks because of the distance that data has to travel to reach Australian users.

"Australia has the sixth largest landmass with the ninth lowest population density in the world so any technology we introduce has to travel long distances, cover large areas and still perform to the levels Telstra customers have come to enjoy," Rocca said.

Head of Nokia Siemens Networks, Kalevi Kostiainen, said that the technology had been extensively tested and created a case for deploying LTE to remote parts of Australia.
