The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday set a late 2004 deadline to decide what, if anything, to do about unsolicited e-mails sent to mobile phones and other portable Internet-connected devices.
UPDATE: President Bush signed the "Can-Spam" bill Tuesday, creating the first federal law regulating spam, a move backers say will be a major step in the war against e-mail solicitations for pornography, Viagra, diet pills, get-rich-quick schemes and the like.
Proposals to control the digital deluge in the US include a national "do not e-mail" list and criminal penalties for repeat offenders.
Data mining company DigiMine has introduced a service to track the behaviour of people who surf the Web from wireless devices, an innovation experts say could result in more targeted advertisements--or an overdose of annoying marketing pitches.
Australia's telecommunications industry is determined to tackle the growing SMS spam epidemic on its own, but mobile users shouldn't expect relief from the annoyance until 2002.
