At 10am on Tuesday, 22 July AEST, Microsoft announced Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 had gone gold and been released to manufacturing partners.
The general public will be able to download the beta of Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7 operating system from 9 January, Microsoft said today, with some customers getting access today.
Microsoft announced the second release of its Windows Server 2008 operating system at its Professional Developer Conference in Los Angeles this week.
Microsoft said on Monday in the US that the server version of Windows 7 would not be a major release and will bear the name Windows Server 2008 R2.
Although businesses will have the option to install only certain pieces of Windows Server 2008, Microsoft isn't likely to sell the operation system in a piecemeal fashion.
SCVMM 2008 R2 is a very competent product, neatly bringing Microsoft's virtualisation management offering in line with the competition at the same time as offering management of disparate platforms in the one product. The integration with the rest of the Systems Center suite makes the overall management and monitoring experience better than its rivals.
The R2 update for Windows Server 2003 was mostly about bug-fixes plus the odd feature tweak, but that's not the case with Windows Server 2008 R2.
