Microsoft confirmed on Tuesday that it has stopped automatic updates of Vista to Service Pack 1 in the wake of a newly discovered glitch.
Microsoft has been forced to delay the launch of SP3 for Windows XP and halted the distribution of SP1 for Windows Vista because both updates caused problems with users of the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System.

Microsoft will release the first service pack for Windows Vista in Q1 2008 and the company has revealed that test versions of the update are currently 1GB; Redmond also admitted it is working on Windows XP SP3.

George Stathakopoulos, general manager of product security at Microsoft, tells us how Windows XP SP2 came about and why the company is not yet ready to talk about XP SP3. He also explains that UAC in Windows Vista is designed to be part of a 'defence in depth' strategy and not a standalone security solution.
Windows Vista Home Basic is essentially warmed-over Windows XP, Windows XP SP3. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista is stable enough for everyday use.
