A group of software developers have created a program to make Microsoft Office work with files in the OpenDocument format, a move that would bridge currently incompatible desktop applications.
Responding to pressure customers and governments, Microsoft has announced Office 2007 Service Pack 2 will add support for the Open Document Format (ODF), Portable Document Format (PDF), and XML Paper Specification (XPS).
While most of the excitement concerning Windows and Office centres around the next full versions of the products, Microsoft is also working on the next service pack updates for each offering.
Microsoft has issued an update for Office Mobile to enable compatibility with Office 2007 documents.
The next version of Microsoft Office will be "dramatically better" as a platform for creating applications, according to Bill Gates, Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect.
