  • Death, taxes and accounting software

Need some help with your taxes this year? While they won't take the sting out of tax time entirely, some of the most recent accounting software offerings are designed to do more than just arithmetic.

  • MYOB Accounting Plus

With the exception of payroll, MYOB Accounting Plus is pretty much a head to head product on a feature basis with QuickBooks Pro although straight MYOB Accounting would be a better match. The package below Accounting Plus is MYOB Accounting, which we did not receive to test, and while less expensive then Accounting Plus does lose the time billing feature as well as payroll and as a consequence both products bracket QuickBooks Pro.

  • MYOB FirstAccounts

For anyone starting off their own small service based business, with the emphasis on small and with limited accounting knowledge, MYOB FirstAccounts would be a darned good starting point. Admittedly, if your company grows you will probably need to upgrade to, say, MYOB Accounting. If you sell a product and need to keep an inventory then FirstAccounts is definitely not for you.

  • Sage Instant Accounting 98

As far as features are concerned, Instant Accounting is a reasonably accomplished package. The lack of purchase requests is a shortcoming that can be addressed by purchasing the next level up in Sage's extensive accounting software range. However, its ease of use lags behind the other packages we reviewed and if you are a novice in this field then we would suggest you look elsewhere.

  • SOHO Accounting Packages

Given the "lean and mean" structure of most small companies it is a bit much to expect them to have in-depth accounting knowledge or be able to hire a dedicated accountant. The answer: SOHO accounting packages.
