The federal Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) has this week announced the recipients of the latest round of funding for Tasmania's Intelligent Island initiative, along with several million dollars more in innovation grants across the country under its Commercial Ready program.
It was supposed to turn the island state of Tasmania into a beacon of Australia's ICT industry, but six years later an audit report has blamed poor management and monitoring of the government-backed BITS Intelligent Island program for repeated delays that have made the program something of a lame duck.
The three year old Intelligent Island programme, designed to boost Tasmania's ICT industry, has been given a new lease of life with the launch of two projects worth more than AU$30 million.
