Customers of Optus and iiNet, along with users of TPG and Internode, have a much faster Internet connection than their Telstra-using counterparts, according to results generated by ZDNet Australia's Broadband Speedtest.
ASX-listed ISP iiNet is to buy fellow West Australian service provider Westnet for AU$81 million in cash.
While Telstra and Australia's main ISPs continue in a monumental struggle over wholesale pricing of broadband services, state governments across the country are side stepping the dispute by supporting the development of broadband infrastructure.
Internet service provider Westnet is believed to be dumping its existing upstream Internet bandwidth providers AAPT and Telstra in favour of nationwide links with the nation's number two telco Optus.
Singapore Telecommunications and its Australian subsidiary, Optus, have terminated an Internet peering arrangement with the Western Australian Internet Association's WAIX exchange, citing "a global network consolidation plan".
The inference that Soul, AAPT and TransACT were Dead Telcos Walking long before their withdrawals were announced makes me wonder whether Terria has always been, God help us all, just as flimsy a proposition as Telstra has made it out to be.
The Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft's (AFACT) hunt for Australia's third largest internet service provider iiNet is set to resume on Monday, with all eyes on its managing director Michael Malone as he takes the stand.
The Internet is in the process of taking over our lives, so if you aren't connected, maybe it is time you were.
