Several of Australia's largest ISPs are saying that Telstra could give up to 8Mbit/s ADSL speeds to broadband consumers right now, and could have 5 years ago when ADSL was first introduced. But Telstra says there's no demand for higher speeds.
ISPs reselling Telstra's broadband services are concerned that the telco is about to start selling ADSL2 services directly to consumers without offering them as a wholesale product -- a move one provider said could be illegal.
Internet service provider Netspace will follow competitors and start offering broadband customers a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service in the first half of 2006.
Several of the nation's largest broadband sellers today said they had no intention of imitating competitor iiNet and suspending the sale of services to new customers in regional markets, although Telstra's wholesale pricing remains a worry.
