Telstra today announced it had upgraded the upload speed of portions of its Next G mobile network to a theoretical 5.8Mbps, with real-world speeds likely to sit between 300Kbps and 3Mbps.
The mobile industry is already in talks with hardware manufacturers about creating smaller, cheaper laptops which come with embedded high speed mobile broadband connectivity.
update: Mobile carrier Vodafone is expected to switch on an upgrade today to its third-generation (3G) mobile phone network that will allow significantly higher download speeds.
Telstra has revealed that no 14.4Mbps devices will be available for its Next G network -- instead the telco will leapfrog from 7.2Mbps hardware straight to kit capable of delivering speeds in the "early 20s".
Telstra chief executive Sol Trujillo today said price cuts by competitors on third-generation mobile services were irrelevant to his company.

It has been a busy year in telecoms, whether because of the increasingly bitter relationship between Telstra and the government; the awarding of the contentious but (finally) progressive broadband contract to OPEL; the pivotal election that led to a change of government; or the move of 3G mobile technology into the mainstream at last.
High-speed mobile broadband has arrived! We compare Telstra's BigPond Wireless Next G service with Vodafone's HSDPA-enhanced 3G network.
Fancy a 1.3Mbps broadband pipeline direct to your notebook, without a cable in sight? The new BigPond wireless data card makes good on Telstra's lofty promises for its Next G network.

The C5220 is a passable prepaid from Telstra. Its low-specs are elevated somewhat by Next G compatibility, though there's little else to recommend it.
LG makes some of our favourite prepaid handsets, and the TU720 is no exception. This new Shine matches good looks with great basic functionality and an excellent online experience.
