  • Gigabyte GeForce3

With a AU$800 street price, the Gigabyte GV-GF3000 is one of the least expensive GeForce3 cards on the market, as well as the only one with a standard digital video port. Overclocking isn't an option. Gigabyte opted for the standard Nvidia reference drivers instead of adding its own customised features. If you simply must have a GeForce3 card, the Gigabyte GV-GF3000 is a relatively affordable, bare-bones package.

  • Going after GeForce3

Graphics card manufacturers are hopping on board with Nvidia's latest GeForce3 chip, and striving to differentiate the products by price and feature set. Before you buy, you'll want to take a close look at each card and sort through the features. Here are four of the most viable contenders. Read the reviews and find out which GeForce3-based graphics best fits your needs.

  • Let the GeForce3 games begin (Gladiac 920)

With the Gladiac 920 (AU$968), Elsa has taken care of its end of the deal and built a high-performance graphics card based on Nvidia's new GeForce3 chip. Now it's up to game companies to start releasing games that will make use of its advanced architecture. The Gladiac 920 offers a nominal speed advantage for current games, but it may not be worth trading in your high-priced GeForce 2 Ultra card just yet.

  • GeForce3's herculean effort

There's no shortage of Prophets at Hercules. After popular 3D Prophet versions I and II based on nVidia GeForce technology, the wait is finally over for the third iteration in the series: the 3D Prophet III. Hercules' GeForce3 debutante is a little pricier than the other GeForce3 boards, but it offers a DVI port for the digital flat-panel monitor owners out there. And its performance is on par with what we've been seeing in the GeForce3 family, which should bring more than enough power for even the most serious gamers. Now if only we had some games that put all of this muscle to use.

  • ASUS plays its card for gamers

Long-time motherboard maker Asus branched out into graphics cards a few years ago. Its latest offering, the Asus AGP-V8200 64MB, is powered by Nvidia's GeForce3 chip.

It was interesting to witness Conroy's recent enthusiasm to spruik the NBN's role in supporting the Smart Grid, Smart City initiative. What a pity that Conroy hadn't yet seen the damning report from the Victorian auditor-general about that state's smart-meter roll-out.
