Intel's business practices will come under the scrutiny of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has opened a formal antitrust investigation of the chipmaker.

AMD has filed a lawsuit against Intel in the American courts accusing the chipmaker of forcing major customers to accept exclusive deals and withholding rebates and marketing subsidies to punish those customers who, it says, buy more AMD processors than agreed with Intel.
Intel said last week it would agree to antitrust recommendations by the Japanese Federal Trade Commission, which called Intel to halt the practice of requiring PC makers to limit the use of competitors' chips in exchange for monetary rebates.
Advanced Micro Devices launched a marketing campaign against Intel on Wednesday, running full-page ads in newspapers to outline the reasons for its antitrust lawsuit and to issue a call to action.
Although AMD has painted Intel as a bully, execs who've dealt with company draw a more ambiguous picture.
Although Intel garners most of its revenue and profits from such well-known processors as the Pentium 4 or the Xeon, it's unsung heroes like the US$40 915G Express chipset, released earlier this year, that have let Intel become the largest and fastest-growing graphics chip designers on the planet.
