Senator Helen Coonan, the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, is to examine the adequacy of the current telecommunications regulatory regime as the government prepares a scoping study into the sale of its remaining shares in Telstra.
Telstra has lashed back at the majority findings of a Senate committee report on the state of its network, saying the document is "fundamentally flawed, inaccurate and out of date."
Telstra claims it is sticking to its rural obligations, saying it has invested more than $8 million dollars in updating 54 rural and regional exchanges.
Telstra has been given till the end of the year to fix 54 Exchange Service Areas which were identified as the worst performing in the country.
With regional Australia continuing to protest federal government plans to privatise the remainder of Telstra, the telecommunications heavyweight has boosted efforts to appease residents in the remote west.
