Australians are paying far more for their broadband service than their counterparts in the Asia-Pacific region, according to a report by IDC.
VPNs are being touted as the way to affordable broadband in Australia, but many services, such as online gaming and streaming media, aren't currently utilised due to the high cost of bandwidth.
With a current user base of around 193 000, set to grow to around 3.5 million by 2006, the broadband market in Australia appears to finally be climbing out of Telstra's wholesale pricing debacle which stymied growth in recent years.
Australian suppliers of broadband services have not seen a drop-off in subscribers, despite factors such as a slowing economy and ongoing complaints over service pricing.
The uptake of broadband has been sluggish by both Australian residential and business customers but its future is bright, with broadband customers expected to hit the four million mark by 2005, according to research company IDC.
