Another variant of the MyDoom worm, which spreads by sending copies of itself using its own SMTP engine and harvesting potential e-mail targets from search engines such as Google and Yahoo, was spreading quickly on Thursday.
Already, experts are beginning to talk about how MyDoom revealed the inadequacies of countermeasures designed to thwart such attacks.
The attack that blacked out Google, Yahoo and other major Web sites earlier this week involved the use of a "bot net"--a large network of zombified home PCs--Internet infrastructure provider Akamai Technologies said Wednesday.
A domain name outage Tuesday morning that left many popular Web sites such as Yahoo, Google, Microsoft.com and Apple.com temporarily inaccessible was the result of an Internet attack, according to Web infrastructure company Akamai.
It's official: MyDoom is the fastest spreading e-mail virus or worm in computer history but what's even more incredible is that it does nothing special; instead, it relies largely upon classic, tried-and-true e-mail infection methods dating back at least four years.
You can't hear them and you can't see them, but be warned, bots are all around us and they do have a search-and-destroy attitude that could be the death of your business.
