Seven new towns have been nominated as early recipients of Tasmania's National Broadband Network (NBN), bringing the total number for the island to 10.
Shadow Communications Minister Nick Minchin today said that he was not surprised with the lack of progress shown thus far in the roll-out of the first leg of the National Broadband Network in Tasmania.
The fibre-optic Basslink cable linking Tasmania to the mainland has officially gone live, with two customers, Aurora and Internode, hooked up to receive transmissions.
Tasmanians have complained they're being left in the dark over the state's leg of the National Broadband Network (NBN), despite the Federal and Tasmanian Governments insisting construction could start within weeks.
Large internet service providers Internode and Netspace yesterday committed to ramp up offerings in Tasmania as soon as the Basslink fibre cable was switched on. But doubts remain about how likely this is to actually happen.
Next month the Senate Select Committee on the NBN will table its final report. It will reflect the views of 100 or so submitted documents and a series of public hearings.
