The Council of Australian Governments yesterday confirmed the goal of introducing individual healthcare identifiers within the next year and vowed to put draft legislation on the table for consultation.
The standards and foundations for nation-wide e-health solutions in Australia have now mainly been completed, according to National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) CEO Peter Fleming, leaving implementation on the agenda for 2009.
The Australian Medical Association has named e-health infrastructure as one of the highest priorities to receive cash from the government's $10 billion Health and Hospitals fund, in a submission to the 2009-2010 Federal Budget released today.
The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting over the weekend proved lucrative for IT, with the National e-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) receiving $218 million to continue its operations and state governments receiving an extra $807 million towards the federal government's computers in schools vision.
The National E-Health Transition Authority has nicked a top technology executive from the National Australia Bank to be its new chief executive.
There will always be something more politically sexy than e-health for state governments, meaning the National E-Health Transition Authority's business case for a national electronic medical record might just sit on the shelf gathering dust forever.
What this new NEHTA funding has done is ensured that its leaders feel vindicated in the way they have behaved they have essentially been 'patted on the head' and any real stimulus for 'root and branch' change has been lost.
