Processor underdog announces next-generation chip plans
It might have a boring name, but Intel's Willamette -- now called Pentium 4 -- sports faster clock speeds and a larger on-board cache. Get ready for 1.4GHz processors to ship later this year.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Thursday outlined aggressive plans for new Athlon chips and predicted a break-even fourth quarter.
The 1GHz race has been run: Advanced Micro Devices and Intel each crossed the finish line this week with speedy processors for new PCs. But the race to put more speed in your PC is a marathon, not a sprint.
Every five to six weeks between now and early next year, AMD will introduce faster Athlons -- beginning at 1.1GHz, Monday.
