Processor underdog announces next-generation chip plans
The 1GHz race has been run: Advanced Micro Devices and Intel each crossed the finish line this week with speedy processors for new PCs. But the race to put more speed in your PC is a marathon, not a sprint.
Intel announced Wednesday a new -- albeit predictable -- brand name for its next-generation desktop processor. The chip formerly known as Willamette, as in the river in Oregon, is now Pentium 4.
There may have been a time when its small size was a disadvantage for Advanced Micro Devices But small is nimble, small is quick. And the chip maker's new president is working to exploit AMD's size to speed innovation.
The race to -- and past -- 1 gig heats up in two weeks.
