Processor underdog announces next-generation chip plans
It might have a boring name, but Intel's Willamette -- now called Pentium 4 -- sports faster clock speeds and a larger on-board cache. Get ready for 1.4GHz processors to ship later this year.
The escalating speed race between Intel and AMD augurs faster, cheaper computers sooner than expected.
Intel announced Wednesday a new -- albeit predictable -- brand name for its next-generation desktop processor. The chip formerly known as Willamette, as in the river in Oregon, is now Pentium 4.
The 1GHz race has been run: Advanced Micro Devices and Intel each crossed the finish line this week with speedy processors for new PCs. But the race to put more speed in your PC is a marathon, not a sprint.
