The head of a Queensland Police Internet child abuse protection unit has outlined safety concerns about mobile phone chatrooms after recent reports they are being used by paedophiles.
Vodafone Australia said it planned to introduce 24-hour moderators and profanity filters in its mobile chat-rooms as part of a range of measures to reduce the potential for paedophiles to abuse the service.
A man who used an Internet chatroom to meet a 15-year-old schoolgirl, and had sex with her, has had his sentence increased on appeal.
A quarter of young female chatroom participants have had an unpleasant experience online according to a global study on Internet usage amongst children. The report found girls to be more than twice as likely as boys to have had a disturbing conversation in a chatroom.
Vodafone will shut the doors on its mobile phone chat rooms until it can implement new measures designed to stop paedophiles abusing the service the company said late today.
