Telstra's 21Mbps Next-G boost and Internode's new 100Mbps FttH networks may be both companies' show ponies, but when it comes to helping most of us, their need-for-speed posturing is just a box-and-dice distraction that we've all seen before.
How much should Telstra be charging for unconditioned local loop?
Is Hackett the Saruman the once-good wizard who is seduced by the dark powers of Sauron of my recent Lord of the Rings scenario? Is something rotten in Renmark and elsewhere?
Like many, I expected Telstra's dismissal was inevitable, given that it had openly flouted the NBN's guidelines and attempted to bend the process to its own wishes. But who would have expected it so soon?
A guy I know runs a tiling business, which as far as I can see involves his drinking lots of coffee, making lots of phone calls, and making sure that around a dozen different tilers do the actual hard work. As long as they're busy, he's making money. If he finds enough new business to keep them all going for two weeks, he can take off for Hawaii -- and still be making money.
There's something immensely gratifying about accomplishing the seemingly impossible -- particularly in IT, where pundits regularly proclaim that a particular technology has hit its physical limits.
If there was ever evidence that the stoush over broadband had gotten personal, it came when Telstra's sour-grapes mentality led it to sue Helen Coonan, personally, for claimed procedural flaws in the OPEL contract.
The men running Telstra have been accused of a lot of things, but lack of conviction is definitely not one of them. I found this out recently after having the chance to hear Phil Burgess, the company's most senior regular spokesperson and an outspoken critic of the government's telecommunications policy, address an AIIA-sponsored business lunch in Melbourne.
Let's not go back to the bad old days where telco and vendor incumbents were unchallenged.
