Tasmanian Liberal Senator Guy Barnett has slammed both the Tasmanian Premier and the Federal Government for not resolving the problem of poor broadband coverage in the state.
Basslink cable owner CitySpring this week said negotiations to switch on the undersea fibre-optic cable to Tasmania were close to concluding, bringing hopes of increased broadband capacity to the island state.
The national broadband network will not be fast enough for Tasmanian businesses, according to consumer action group Digital Tasmania, and could even mean further delays for the Basslink cable.
Basslink Telecoms has received a carrier licence from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), and says its fibre-optic cable could be operational by the end of this year, but consumer action group Digital Tasmania is sceptical.
Without more investment in high-speed fibre broadband, Australia's competitiveness will suffer, according to academic Internet service provider Australian Academic and Research Network (AARNet).
