NEC announced today it had entered the netbook market, with the release of its 8.9-inch Versa N1100 based on the Intel Atom processor.
Asus has announced the final specifications for the first Eee Box desktop version of its popular Eee PC subnotebook and it will include Windows XP, which has now been given a reprieve on some desktops, as well as Eee PC-type notebooks.
The new chips, described by the company as entirely Core 2 Duo-compatible but with a tenth of the power requirements, will first reach the market in a fleet of partner mobile Internet devices (MIDs) in late May or early June.
Asus packs the same basic components found in other Netbooks into a stylish, slim chassis for a modest premium in price, with some unfortunate keyboard-layout compromises.
The Eee is now faster, looks nicer, and has better battery life. It's also heavier and the keyboard is still too small, but we like it. A lot.
Lenovo's "me, too!" entry in the netbook sweepstakes, the IdeaPad S10, gets the price and features right, but falls behind on battery life.
HP may have arrived late to the consumer netbook game, but by lifting the generous keyboard from last year's business-oriented model, the Mini 1000 easily joins the category's top tier.
The Acer Aspire One is better than most netbooks and is fantastic for anyone who wants a small, cheap machine on which to type and surf the Web. However, its battery life lets it down slightly.
