A prominent crusader against unsolicited e-mail ads withdrew from an escalating cyberwar with spammers on Wednesday after his Web site and numerous others came under a massive retaliatory attack.
Spammers are suspected of hacking into and downing Lycos's anti-spam Web site just hours after it went live. The Web site is currently inaccessible and could also be the victim of a DDoS attack.
A cyberattack that shut down Blue Security also felled thousands of blogs when the antispam site deflected the malicious hits, analysts said.
After days of negative publicity and criticism, the 'Make love not spam' application is no longer available. Lycos says it's just been too popular, and promises it will be back.
