Optus mobile customers in Sydney's CBD faced an outage of over two hours yesterday evening following a fault.

At around 5:30pm yesterday evening, a transmission fault occurred on Optus' network. The telco's 3G and 2G voice services were hit in the Sydney CBD, with many users unable to make phone calls or access their internet through the telco's 3G network.

Optus users took to Twitter and Whirlpool to voice their complaints about the outage.

A number of Virgin mobile customers also reported similar problems with their network access.

In a statement to ZDNet Australia, Optus said the transmission fault resulted in a call signalling failure but services began coming back online around 7:40pm when Optus engineers isolated and repaired the fault.

The telco has apologised for the outage.
