A survey of start-up companies has found that Sydney narrowly places ahead of Melbourne as a more supportive city for new start-up ventures, according to new data released by Floq today.

The Floq survey was taken by 92 different start-ups from the two cities combined, with 52 of them based in Sydney, and 40 in Melbourne. They were all asked to rate the supportiveness of their respective cities on a scale where "one" was very unhelpful towards start-ups and "seven" was very helpful towards start-ups.

Sydney took the honours, with an average survey score of 4.46 out of seven — indicating that Sydney rates just above neutral for start-ups, according to the Floq scale — with Melbourne coming in at 4.05 out of seven.

Other questions asked in the survey included how supportive friends, family, investors and mentors have been towards realising the dream of having a successful start-up company.

Floq is an Australian company that offers online survey tools to users.

The survey data represents the first pieces of information to emerge in Floq's Startup Nation survey, which aims to find out "how important location is in digital entrepreneurship", company CEO Jonah Cacioppe said in a statement today.

The company wrote in a blog post that it will publish Startup Nation data gleaned from start-ups that take the Floq survey once every quarter.
