Are your data backups up-to-date? Are you sure? Have you tested them lately? Could your business survive an equipment failure, flood, fire or theft?

At the enterprise level, one of the big IT services providers can sort you out. But what about small and SOHO businesses? Is tape backup still the way to go? Or is it time to move to the now-cheap high-capacity hard drives or even cloud storage?

In Patch Monday this week, Sally McIntosh from PR firm Condiment Communications relates her lack-of-backup horror story. And Garth Kidd, systems engineer and now tool developer with a major provider of enterprise storage and backup solutions brings his professional focus to small business needs.

"Structured paranoia" is the answer, Kidd says. He provides a few tips for planning your business' backup needs — including his solution for his own OS X systems.

Plus we have Stilgherrian's usual idiosyncratic look at the week's IT news headlines.
