Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007

Internet Security's latest version was hard to install and produced several noticeable glitches that distracted us from the benefits of the suite.

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 suite is in transition. Although the package still retains the name PC-cillin, the company refers to the product as Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 and sees it more as an umbrella suite that encompasses the PC-cillin antivirus protection on the desktop and their new TrendSecure suite online-only extras. Whatever the name, whatever the grouping, we weren't all that impressed with Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, especially after we experienced a few notable glitches, not once, but several times, from September 2006 through to February 2007. We do applaud Trend Micro's technical support, which is free, and we also like some of the unique security tools, such as the one that checks your machine for all the recent Microsoft update patches. For the average user, however, we still recommend ZoneAlarm Internet Security 7, which is a much lighter, better balanced Internet security suite with fewer glitches.

We repeatedly had trouble connecting to the Internet after installing different versions of Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007. Trend Micro says it is working on a fix.

Installation and setup
Unfortunately, we experienced trouble with each installation of Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 suite from September 2006 through to February 2007, despite program updates from Trend Micro. The worst required us to disable then re-enable the Trend Micro firewall to connect to the Internet. Trend Micro admitted this was a known problem on some machines and assured us a fix was forthcoming. However, in February 2007, six months after general release, Trend Micro mailed us two different updated CDs for installation. Despite the update, we still had to disable, then re-enable the firewall to contact with our wireless network. On average, it took us about 20 minutes of combined installation, updates, and some juggling between enabling and disabling the Windows and Trend Micro firewalls, before we were able to start using the product, far longer than any other product we tested. Not exactly a smooth installation.

The interface for Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 is simpler than in previous versions, although we found the TrendSecure side panel distracting.

The Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 interface has been simplified from previous versions, perhaps too much. Features are grouped along the left-hand side, with specific configuration settings filling the main, right-hand window. A right side panel contains TrendSecure information, such as updates to existing applications available for download. We found this annoying, popping open every time we accessed the main console. We also noticed that after our installation of the product, we had an unexplained blank space at the bottom of the Firefox browser, something not present on Internet Explorer. We could find no information or remedy for this on the Trend Micro Web site.

As a Trend Micro PUG member I was surprised at this article,

Although not an expert, I would have to agree generally with your review. I have used PC Cillan since 2002 and always found it an excellent product. However the latest version is an absolute nighmare for someone with little computer experience.

The worst problem I have found is that the software slows the whole computer down. Surfing and computer usage has slowed remarkably. Despite having a 2.66 ghtz processor and 1gb of ram my system has never been so slow.

My alernatative has been to buy AVG professional for half the cost of Trend Micro, and to buy Lavasoft firewall. The combination of these two software programs works for me, and are not resource heavy, and I have found my system is faster now even than it was with trendmicro 2006 version.

TrendMicro was a good program once, but now there are definately better programs out there in the market place, for half the cost, and a bonus with most of these is that you do not have to pay for a licence to cover three or more computers. Let's be honest. If you are a single individual like me, with only one computer, why be ripped off by being forced to buy a licence to cover multiple computers. It seems there is no end of greed to these big companies.

A lot of reviews have said that Norton's is a resource hog though a good program. My only complaint with Norton's is that a special uninstall program has to be downloaded if you wish to remove the program. If such is the case in being a resource hog, than Trend Micro would now have to share this dubious honour.

I have installed and setup this version more than 10 times and did't have any experience as yours.

I have just requested a refund from Trend Micro after 2 months of problems with the suite. Every time I update it prompts for a reboot. After the reboot it updates again then guess what prompts for a reboot. After several patronizing emails detailing basically the same solution which didn't work, in fact creating new problems with windows security pop up stating I had no firewalll or antivirus installed and having to disable their own email filter to reply to their emails I had enough and insisted I get a refund. My advice don't tough this glitchy program with a pole.

  5. sluggish with PC-Cillin 2007 Anonymous -- 18/05/07

I'm suspicious about PC-Cillin 2007 - my processor is working flat out today even with almost no applications open and they are very sluggish - plus the cooling fan which is never normally on is kicking in a lot. Something is grabbing resources - either PCC7 or something it hasn't detected. This happened when I first installed it - went away - and is now back again.

      From the box...yes.
They have a patch they fixes the problem.
      Upgrade to Program Version 15.30.1511

Yes i would have to agree with you, my computer has been working flat out and the fan comes on alot trying to deal with it. PCC7 is a hog! Im due to renew my PCC7, i think i will go 4 something else this time!

  6. Trendmicro 2007 - UGH! LD -- 24/06/07

I've used Trendmicro for several years and used to prefer it. IBut since the 2006 release performance has gone in the sh***er! 2007 Internet Security is just horrid. Slowed my system down to the speed of frozen camel dung.

Tried the engine update as suggested above and it uninstalled the existing product but never installed new version. Rebooted and ran again and it starts a new installation and requires a new serial number.

Original installation was a nightmare and I'm going to demand a refund. This product should never have been released.

I willhave to agree with the ngative comments of this product.
It uses too much resources, too much menory, slows down applicaitons from loading and then using.
Word 97 takes 10 seconds to load.
Brwosing is like having a 64k connection.

The online support although on the face one would think is a great idea, leaves you hanging.
The firewall is too slow to trap actions and although I have never had a virus attack warning, this could be down to luck.

I hate you PC Cillin 2007
My computer is slow a commodore 64 and their solution to the problem was useless.
    Arggggg!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Trend 2007 Anonymous -- 29/11/07

Get rid of it. I was thinking about buying new memory as pccillin was taking up 200mb and leaving me with 30% free system resorces after bootup. Changing to Mcaffee has worked a treat, especially as it was free through my bank

  9. Trend Stinks Anonymous -- 21/03/08

Trend is probably the worst supported Antivirus on the market.

After weeks of trying to get support and being ignored I gave up trying to make it work on an Asus Laptop, Asus recomended I remove it to solve the problem, and it did.

Now Trend is getting 2/3 through sending a email, says it has a problem and resends. The message was sent a dozen times before I put a stop to it.

I have now removed Trend Internet security, never to be used again.

  10. Trend Micro rocks if your'e rich, if you can't afford.... Your Mama -- 12/05/08

The hardware necessary to run it, don't use your credit card to buy it.

    Intel Quad-Core Q9450 @ 3.2GHz
    8GB A-Data 800Mhz Ram
    Windows Vista Ultimate x64

My computer rapes any program I install on it. Stop complaining losers and get a real CPU like mine if you're going to run a 275MB suite like this.

    Oh yeah Trend Micro ownz!!!

ya, that's it. cuz NO ONE has a "l33t" 'puter like you huh? get a clue 12 year old! I have a slighty better PC than you, and I'm not full on puttin you down for it... but really, Trend is crap! You want protection, go for something like Nod32, or if you're cheap, Avast! is FREE! and both work great, doesnt ask for a reboot every update (which to me is ridiculous if you actually USE your computer) and dont slow your pc to s**t.
I am a Field Service Tech, and a Network admin, so yes, I DO know "a thing or 2" about the ins and outs of PC's. Please do me, and all other PC Tech's a favor and NEVER INSTALL this POS!
