The 7.04 release is far more user friendly than the previous 5.10 version, the GUI is more than adequate for most PC users with the reduced threat of malicious mal-ware that oh-so-effect MS offerings.
The good: Bill Gates didn't release it, Extremely secure, Friendly helpful support forums/community It's FREE! Did I mention it's FREE?
The bad: Didn't come with DVD playback support (out of the box) Can take a little time adopting Linux based applications A higher learning curve (compared to MS offerings) when using advanced features
A few points were overlooked in this review::
Setup: Ubuntu has its own free fully featured partition editor/resizer with support for FAT32 & NTFS viz. GParted accessible from the Live CD, so a third party tool like PQMagic is not needed.
Interface: The GNOME interface is flexible enough to be changed exactly like Windows by removing the GNOME menu bar and replacing it with the GNOME Menu from the 'add to applet' option; after moving the taskbar panel below.
Features: Though iptables/netfilter is available, it is turned off by default since the OS is not running any services, a port scan will confirm this. Firestarter would be required if users intend to run any services like http or VNC.
An anti-virus is not an absolute requirement under Ubuntu Desktop since the OS runs on a non-administrator mode, but can be useful for scanning mails that are received from and forwarded to Windows users.
The good: ->Its completely free, with no strings attached ->Best Usability features as far as Linux is concerned for a totally free Linux Dist...unlike Xandros, Linspire etc ->Debian core
The bad: -> It doesn't actually work out of the box, needs a lot of customization & time ->Not recommended foe people who has just taken a crash course in Windows ->Needs better integration for GLX/AIGLX Compsiting -> Hardware configuration can be daunting if not standard

For a more windows looking experience there is a version called Kubuntu. Same OS different look.
As for the firewall thing, all versions of Ubuntu come standard with iptables (the actual firewall) and firestarter is really just a graphical frontend if you wish to modify your settings. Basically though Ubuntu is as close to bulletproof as you can get out of the box.
The good: Its not Windows Secure Free Comes with oodles of free applications and even more using the package manager.
The bad: Its not Windows Most likely will not work with existing programs (some will some wont using a program called WINE) Learning curve can be steep
