Zone Labs ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0

Due out later this year, ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0 promises changes that are much more subtle than ZAP 3.0, but no less powerful.

Last year, ZoneLabs unveiled a whole new look and feel for the release of its popular ZoneAlarm Pro 3.0. Due out this June, ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0 promises changes that are much more subtle but no less powerful. (The Pro version of 4.0 will be available for US$50, and ZoneLabs will release a free, stripped-down version of 4.0 available shortly thereafter.)

A software firewall should open and close Internet-connected ports on your computer. From what we've seen so far, ZoneAlarm Pro (ZAP) 4.0 does this and then some. Although ZoneAlarm 4.0 will look more or less like version 3.0, ZoneLabs has added depth to a number of popular features. Here's an overview of what we know is coming; watch this space for our full, critical review of the final product.

Outbound MailSafe:
E-mail viruses have gotten so smart that they no longer need to use Microsoft Outlook to spread. ZAP 4.0 attempts to get smarter as well by promising technology that blocks outbound e-mail that could be the product of a computer virus.

Hacker ID:
Using a third-party partnership, ZoneLabs now provides a way for users to find out who is attacking their system and report the attacks to the appropriate ISP.

New firewall controls:
While you have always been able to configure ZoneAlarm Pro for your third-party apps that go out to the Internet, you can now create your own rule sets, or custom firewall rules, ideal for online gamers who need to have certain ports open at certain times.

Automatic VPN configuration:
ZoneAlarm Pro will now assist in the configuration of virtual private networks, or VPNs , whether you need to use one for work or have one set up on your home wireless network.

Privacy features: ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0 will remove your system's hard drive and browser cache files, Internet temporary files, Recycle Bin files, and search history so that none of them can be used to report on your Internet or computer usage. ZAP 4.0 also blocks pop-up ads and manages cookies.
