Roxio Easy Media Creator 7Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7 offers the most comprehensive and well-integrated suite of CD- and DVD-burning tools on the market.

With Easy Media Creator 7, Roxio hasn't just strapped a few of its flagship applications together; it's built a new Swiss Army Knife suite for digital media and disc burning. Easy Media Creator, which will be available from late March, expands upon Easy CD & DVD Creator , keeping the suite tightly integrated but making it a much broader set of media-editing tools for photos, video, data and audio. Pinnacle and Sonic have bulked up their editing and authoring offerings, and Ahead Software's and NTI's burning applications offer more depth, but none currently matches Easy Media Creator's expansive scope -- not even Apple's iLife. If you're looking for a suite of software that can handle almost any kind of CD or DVD project -- capturing and ripping, editing and authoring, saving and sharing, or burning and playing -- look no further than Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7.

Easy Media Creator 7 comes on two CDs -- one with all of the applications and another packed with audio and video clips, textures and graphics. Conflicts between different disc-burning tools have been an ongoing problem with Windows systems, so Roxio recommends that you first uninstall other packet-writing or drive-emulation software on your system; the software will automatically detect previous versions of Easy CD Creator and offer to remove them, too. After we typed in our CD key, the installation chugged away for about 15 minutes -- reasonable, considering the amount of software.

Roxio has brought a common look and feel to Easy Media Creator's various components. There are large buttons and pop-up tool tips for beginners, although advanced users can opt for more options and controls. Because of Easy Media Creator's sheer number of tools, Roxio has devised an excellent new user interface. Expanding on a more traditional launcher setup, in which you select which specific application to open, Easy Media Creator also features a user-friendly, task-oriented interface. Split into three tiers, the home page's top row offers a list of possible jobs, divided by category: Music, Data (CD), Photo, Video, and DVD. The middle row provides a more traditional list of the available applications and tools, while the bottom row displays a list of recent projects for quick access.

Although Easy Media Creator's components are highly integrated, they're still separate applications. When you select a task, the home menu immediately disappears, and you're left with a blank screen until an application loads; it's a bit disconcerting at first. The suite's Media Manager is great for previewing and organising all of your files, but it's not always the most efficient way to execute tasks such as editing a group of photos or videos. Thankfully, each editing application still includes its own integrated browser or preview interface.

Easy Media Creator 7 brims with features new and old. Roxio has taken a major step in dividing up capture and management components for all types of media -- photo, video, and audio. But it also makes it easy to bring all of the media types back together to create complete productions, such as slide shows and DVDs.

Creator Classic, Roxio's trusty application for burning data and audio CDs and MP3 discs, can now perform scheduled backups for periodic, automated data archiving. Roxio's Retrieve utility can be included on backup discs to extract files with optional encryption or multi-disc spanning. A Drag-to-Disc feature lets you write discs directly from Windows Explorer, while the handy Disc And Device utility provides information on disc drives and their contents.

For audio work, Creator can now rip to the Ogg Vorbis format, and it uses the Gracenote CDDB2 service to identify audio CDs. Another utility lets you create disc labels, jewel case inserts and booklets. Beyond simple disc-to-disc copying, the Disc Copier utility also lets you extract material from unprotected DVD-Video discs. You can preview video content, select an individual video title, and choose to copy just the primary audio format; however, you cannot pick and choose video titles and audio tracks. The Disc Copier is OK, but limited compared to some standalone tools such as InterVideo's DVD Copy.

The Capture tool can import photos from a camera or scanner, grab video from a camcorder or a TV tuner, or capture audio; the SmartScan feature lets you prescan a DV tape to preview scenes before capturing, saving time in the long run. You can also use Capture to extract video clips from a DVD disc or DVD folder on a hard disk, but with less control than you have using Disc Copier. During our testing, the DVD disc-scanning feature often failed to find clips.

PhotoSuite 7 provides a very friendly interface for common photo-editing tasks, as well as enhancement options such as painting, masking and facial-flaw correction; it's a nice application for beginners but has less depth than other dedicated photo editors. For video editing, VideoWave 7 offers a host of options for users of various skill levels; you can use CineMagic to automatically edit a video production, StoryBuilder to guide you through the process more manually or the Production Editor interface to create a production using a storyboard or time-line view. We really like VideoWave's multiple modes, and it should keep new users happy for quite a while.

Easy Media Creator includes DVD Builder for authoring DVDs and a variety of VCD formats. It offers template-based DVD menu design, with control over designing menus, buttons, chapters and tracks of multiple clips (with transitions). The Plug & Burn feature records directly from a DV camcorder to a DVD disc, and the Edit DVD disc feature can edit directly on a rewritable disc or add new titles to a recordable disc before it is finalised.

Easy Media Creator has loads of other features, including a basic sound editor, a simple media player that cannot display movies in full wide-screen and Napster 2.0 for (legally) previewing and purchasing downloaded music (Napster's revamped service is not yet launched in Australia).

Roxio offers good support for Easy Media Creator 7. Extensive built-in help comes by way of links to the PDF user guides and additional online resources. The company's Web site offers a searchable knowledge base and discussion groups with active responses from Roxio staff. Roxio provides complimentary email technical support, but for only 90 days after a user's first contact. Telephone support costs US$35 per incident. Support requires a Technical Support Identification number, found on the installation CD (but different from the CD Key).

I have owned CD creator since ...Anonymous -- 13/03/04

I have owned CD creator since Adaptec owned it. I had Roxio 6 which worked well with DVDs. I purchased Roxio 7 and went to download (800+ MB) the file. I was introduced to their Download Manager. I have a dedicated T3 connection. IT TOOK 3 days to d/l! Then, when it was 100% it gave a general error, “An error has occurred. Please cancel the delivery and try again. If the error persists, please contact you product vendor.” Not the best English, but I retried 5 times with the same error. Then I attempted to contact Roxio, which there are no contact telephone numbers. I email their tech support and received a message which stated since Jan 2004, they have re-engineered their tech support, some delays can be expected. It is now March 12, 2004. I am not impressed.

    I POSITIVELY RECOMMEND IT...

This product packs a punch, with all the features it offers in one all-in-one package. These features include everything you need: backing up your data and burning discs, creating audio/MP3 CDs, importing photos and capturing video, editing photos and videos, creating slide shows and videos, creating DVDs and CDs, and creating labels for your discs. Some of the unique features include: how the Storyboard allows you to mix photos and videos with transitions; how you can apply Pan and Zoom Effects to videos and photos; and the SmartVideo Capture feature where you can preview video scenes and only import selected scenes.

One other thing I like best about Easy Media Creator is the VALUE it delivers. I get all these capabilities in a product costing well under $100.

    Superb Product with Wonderful Support.

As a satisfied user of Easy Media Creator 7 I can confidently recommend it to all. It has a portfolio of features that are all easy to use thanks to an intuitive interface. There is a slight learning curve, so take advantage of the PDF user guides and the how-to video tutorials included with it. I found other good information using the knowledgebase on Roxio's web site. I must commend them on their responsive customer support. I emailed them with questions and they sent me helpful responses usually in a day or so. Most of all, the program delivers on its promise of being an Easy Media Creator.

A MUST HAVE Product for anyone ...Anonymous -- 06/07/04

A MUST HAVE Product for anyone working with digital media!

As an IT Manager I evaluate, test and support a variety of software products. Some of them requiring weeks of training to learn how to use. I bought Easy Media Creator 7 for my personal use and have found it to be the exact opposite, very easy to learn. In no time I have been editing photos, creating video productions and a multitude of disc creation tasks. Awesome product for users at all levels.

AWESOME PROGRAM FOR SLIDESHOWS ...Anonymous -- 13/08/04

AWESOME PROGRAM FOR SLIDESHOWS AND MUCH, MUCH MORE. I use it for capturing, managing, editing and turning all my digital pictures into cool looking slideshows. I can add transitions, music or narration to liven up the slideshow. Another great feature is to use Pan and Zoom effects to add motion to my "still" photos by zooming into a portion of the photo or moving it around the screen. Finally, it allows me to master my slideshows to DVD or VCD so I can easily share and view my pictures on TV. I also use Creator 7 for the great CD/DVD backup and creation tools. It is a terrific product at a reasonable price and I recommend it to everyone.

Brilliant Suite of Software -- From day one this has been an incredible product. It installed perfect on my PC running XP. The user interface is quite compelling, and made it simple to learn. The video tutorials and user guides helped me when I had difficulty. The suite of software is amazing and does everything I need for working with and creating audio discs, backing up my data, working with digital photos and digital video, and creating DVDs. Using Creator 7 I have created some brilliant DVDs containing family photos and home movies. I recommend it.

What is the point of having links as the one to Roxio at the bottom of this page? If you follow the links to make a purchase, you find, eventually, that the Roxio site you are on is now in the Evil Empire, AKA the USA, and you are unable to buy the product, either in CD ROM or download version. GGrrrrr.

    Incredibly functional product.
It's not very often that I feel I just have to write about a product, but this is one of those times. For the price, this is an incredibly functional product that does so many things well. I've been using it for the last 5-6 months and have been impressed with the ease of use and how quickly I’ve been able to touch up my photos and create cool looking DVDs with it. Other handy tools I often use are the media manager for organizing all my photos, video clips and music files and the classic CD and DVD burning tools. I recommend it.

Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 is useless.

If you are using the programme as a stand-alone maybe you will survive. Trying to transfer information to another PC is when the fun starts.
Drag To Disc takes over and its' format conflicts with with other PC's not loaded with Drag To Disc. It actually crashed our laptops. The same operating system is used on all of our PC's: Windows XP Pro

Removing it from your system is even more fun. It intergrated itself into the operating system (XP) By the time I removed Roxio and rebooted, it had made that many changes to XP it had to be reactivated to continue.

I now use Nero 6 and everything is working fine, including transferring information between PC's.

    regards

    Warren

Potential users would do well ...Anonymous -- 14/03/05

Potential users would do well to have a look at the EMC7 forums, not all happy Roxio, neither am I. The jungle explorer would feel right at home!

    The DVD Creator
If you don't mind very elementary menu layouts that are a pain to do much with, a chapter menu that almost defies editing - when you can eventually get to it - and when you edit it it probably won't stay as you left it, and if it does it will probably change the main menu as well!

This is really wonderful! Edit the MPEG file(s), even marginally, and set to burn and EMC7 will re-encode the MPEG resulting in poor quality video on disk! looks like 10 frames/sec.

The other good thing: Your saved file to HDD will probably end up being twice as big as when it started!

Forum is quite good & easy to use - just as well!

    Wait for later versions.

    Updates Anonymous -- 27/10/05

I'm not at all impressed by Roxio. Having upgraded my operating system to XP, the software not longer runs, and their is no free update available.
"Buy the latest release," I'm told. Talk about a rip-off!
Roxio can stick their program right where it hurts. I'll me happy with Nero.
