Have successfully attached SJphone to an IP 500 using H.323 protocol.
Suspect other softphones capable of H.323 would also work.
The Avaya softphone solution is garbage. In 9 months it has never worked correctly. So for our remote agents, we are forwarding their extensions to Skype, which oddly enough has performed marvelously.
Additionally, Avaya has no interest in providing customer or technical support for their product. If you are looking for a system that can support remote users, do not consider Avaya IP Office as a solution.
A year and $25,000 later we are seeking a new solution.
The bad: See comments above. No support of software, and Avaya fails to stand behind their product.
Have had the IP500 for over a year and a half, minor glitches here and there. Did a complete digital system, no IP phones as it was more cost effective. Two buildings setup for over 40 users, including 8 fax lines. Many features I have not had time to mess with, but overall a great system for the price, our system has had less errors than a $100,000 cisco system of the same size installed by our corporate office, and they are just in one building.
The good: Features for the price. Very cheap solution with an abundance of phone features. Easy to scale and program a person into the system. Very professional looking phone.
The bad: Avaya is a terrible company, need to get the right installation guy and a maintenance agreement so you do not have to deal with avaya directly. Analog ports are not very reliable. Dial-In Conference calls are not password protected.
I own a small Avaya shop in Baltimore, Maryland (www.myteltek.com) and we have installed over 100 Avaya IP Office Systems for our clients. I can tell you that a lot of the negative reviews on here are not due to the product but bust likely the installation and configuration of the system. While the system does have some minor flaws please know that it is not an "out of the box" solution and requires professional installation from a company that is not only extremity knowledgeable of the product but also of computer networking.
Additionally, this system requires the end-user to dedicate some time preplanning and working with the installation technician. Finally, finding a company that is customer service oriented and does not consider the system installation complete until it is all of the %u201Ccorks%u201D of the system are worked out is a must%u2026check references and look for Avaya Certified Business Partners in your area (easily found on www.avaya.com).
The good: Features like, SoftPhone, Remote IP Hard Phones and especially the conferencing bridge do work and are huge selling points of this system. People buy the IP Office solely for the conference bridge %u2013 setting up a password on it is a simple programming change. If you own an IP Office and are having issues try finding another Avaya dealer or give me a call (1.866.9 Teltek; service@myteltek.com) and we can probably fix it remotely for you. 95% of the concerns that I am reading on here can be fixed with a simple configuration change or firmware upgrade. This can all be done remotely with minimal impact to your business.
The bad: There are a lot of people selling Avaya products that are not certified to install them and don't fully understand the process of a successful implementation. Do your homework and research the company you are purchasing from %u2013 check references. Under no circumstances should you buy this product from someone that has not come out to your office to do a physical site survey. Without considering cabling, network infrastructure, phone and Internet services you are asking for a disaster with any new phone system implementation, especially the Avaya IP Office. Spend time up front and eliminate pain in the end; find a dealer that is reputable, local, and that can provide you with several references of other local companies and call them. Also, plan to spend some time with the technician preplanning (cut sheets) and doing administrator and end-user training once the system is installed. Finally ensure that you are purchasing from an Authorized Dealer because if you don%u2019t and need to get support you will be out of luck when you call Avaya. Prices are significantly less on the gray market but please don%u2019t be a statistic and learn this lesson the hard way.

One of your con's is a perceived lack of softphone support. However as you mentioned the system comes with Phone Manger which can be upgraded to full softphone support.
