First Look: Iomega 4x2.4x12 DVD+RW May 02, 2003 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/hardware/storage/soa/First-Look-Iomega-4x2-4x12-DVD-RW/0,139023427,120274112,00.htm
Iomega's first DVD burner records to a variety of formats at some pretty impressive speeds. Forget your Zip drives and CD writers: The smart storage buy this year is on DVD writers. Or at least that's what the powers that be would have us believe. With the format gaining in popularity, more manufacturers are joining in the DVD frenzy. The latest entrant into the DVD recording ranks is storage giant Iomega, which recently announced its first DVD burner, the AU$599 Iomega 4x2.4x12 DVD+RW. Specs-wise, this IDE drive's speed credentials are on par with other top DVD writers in the market today--the Iomega 4x2.4x12 DVD+RW writes DVD+R media at 4x, CD-Rs at 16x, and CD-RWs at 10x. The Iomega's DVD+RW media recording speed, however, remains at the industry-standard 2.4x. The drive also doesn't record to DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM, although it reads processed DVD-R and DVD-RWs. For multimedia enthusiasts stuck with recording at the 2.4x mark, the 4x boost should be a welcome enhancement as it translates to around a 50 percent improvement during writing, and faster file backups when copying data to a 4.7GB disc--at 4x (or 5.5MBps), filling an entire DVD disc takes less then 18 minutes. Iomega equips the drive with a 2MB memory buffer and employs Buffer UnderRun Protection technology to prevent media-destroying errors during the writing process. Two bits of good news here for potential buyers: Firstly, the Iomega 4x2.4x12 DVD+RW is accompanied by a generous list of software titles to satisfy all your recording-related needs. This includes Iomega's HotBurn Pro utility for mastering both writable and rewritable DVDs and CDs, Iomega Automatic Backup for backing up data and Sonic's MyDVD for video editing and converting home movies into video DVDs. Other software goodies include MusicMatch Jukebox for playing, recording, and organising a variety of music files (including WAV and the highly popular MP3 format) and Sonic CinePlayer for DVD movie playback. The other bit of good news for DVD connoisseurs is that they won't have to wait long to get their hands on the drive--Iomega officially launched the product a few days ago, so expect the real thing to hit regional shelves by early May. The drive will retail for AU$599, backed by a one-year limited warranty from Iomega. We'll have a full review once we've finished our testing, so watch this space.
