The world isn't black and white but full of many shades of grey, and you should remember this when you're looking for a flatbed scanner; you're not restricted to looking to the high-end or the low-end.

True, there are the low-end scanners, which are affordable and easy to use but capable of mediocre scans only. Then there are the high-end devices, offering excellent quality, tons of cranks and levers, and high resolutions--but with a lofty price to match. However there are scanners occupying a middle ground between features and price that offer the best of both worlds.

Hovering around AU$500, they offer more scanning power than low-end ones can muster but without the exorbitant, high-end price. Buy one of these and you'll be walking away with high resolutions, negative- and slide-scanning accessories, and truckloads of useful software. We took a look at two of these mid-range marvels and found that it is indeed possible to scan with professional power without spending a fortune.
