In medium sized enterprises, colour laser printing service is either tightly controlled or non-existent. IT managers working in this scale of business can't justify the sharp spike in their cost schedules for performance levels that fall short of demand generated on the office floor. Lexmark's C720 series colour laser printer may change this.
The C720's performance and running costs could make the benefits of colour laser printing an affordable option for medium-sized enterprises. Lexmark claims that in colour the C720 can generate 6 colour A4 pages per minute (ppm) at a cost of around 24 cents per page, for prints requiring 20 percent ink coverage. And its performance isn't marred by a frustrating warm-up period; you'll only have to wait 23 seconds between your first request and the time a warm new print rolling on to the printer output tray. In two-colour mode the printer can produce 12ppm and 24ppm in monochrome.
Lexmark have managed to provide this performance without sacrificing print quality. The C720s default resolution for monochrome prints is 2400IQ and 600 by 600 dpi (dots per inch) for colour. Assisted by its unique Photo Enhancement Technology, the C720 automatically adjusts colour output to produce photo-quality images. It also offers a toner-saver mode that reduces toner consumption by 20 percent.
The C720 is available in three configurations: The basic configuration contains a 266MHz PMC-Sierra processor and 32M of RAM, and is suitable for business scenarios where a stand-alone system is adequate. It's more advanced cousins, the C720n and dn models are fitted out to handle higher demand network environments. The C720n contains 64M of RAM, built-in 10/100 Ethernet capability and 250-sheet input capacity. The C720dn is identical to the n model but has 500 sheets of input capacity and a duplex unit for double-sided printing.
The Ethernet capable models of the C720 are compatible with a broad range of network environments including Windows 9x, 2000, NT, ME, Unix, OS/2, Mac and Linux. Toner cartridge yields vary depending on the print density of the images generated most regularly by the printer, but at an average of 20 percent coverage, each cartridge yields 12,000 monochrome or 7,200 colour prints.
The C720 is available from authorised Lexmark resellers.
