This printer is excellent, have found it ideal in every way, after the initial setup.

You do know that the "USB" socket is actually a PictBridge socket and just as well you couldn't get your flash drive in it!

The good: Duplex scanning and printing over network cables. CD/DVD printing is very good/quick/simple. Photo quality is great. Cost of running is fair to good.

The bad: Need to configure networking thought the USB port the first time.

Set-up was simple and installed on 2 pcs on a simple LAN with the Ethernet option in under 1 hour. All functions have worked 1st time and every time. This printer is a true multi-function printer with the inclusion of the fax. I have only used via a LAN and cannot comment on the USB operation. I have only used HP or Canon printers prior to this, however the MX-850 has been one of my best out-of-the box experience ever.

The good: Easy set-up. All functions simple to use and view from the control panel and LCD. Consumerables are reasonably priced and flexible to change where a particular cartridge runs empty.

The bad: Initial print or scan could be faster, but following pages were quick enough. Once or twice whilst scanning, I have had to re-boot the pc to clear a hung operation, although I haven't yet traced the source of this problem to either the MX-850, the included software, or the Vista operating system.

Do you plan to add a 6x4 photo cassette as in the iP6600D? This seems the only thing holding me back from upgrading to the mx8500.

I have a weird problem with the fax setting. When in "network switch" setting an incoming fax will not switch automatically to the fax. When I set the machine up for the first time I tested it and it worked perfectly. However, in following days this failed and I can only now use the "telephone priority" mode.

    Can any one help?

The good:
  • Quick, quality scanning
  • Plenty of functionality well suited to offices
  • Good software
The bad:
  • Much slower print speed than promised
  • Not great for photo printing
  • No USB cable supplied
The bottomline:

The Canon PIMXA is a solid office performer with a raft of features; just don't expect top quality photograph printing.
